Ricky Gervais could easily have made an enemy of Johnny Depp when he slammed his film The Tourist at the 2011 Golden Globes.
Ricky, 50, joked as he presented the awards ceremony: 'It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional - except for the characters in The Tourist. I haven't even seen The Tourist - who has?'.
The British comedian was touched to find out Johnny took the comment in good spirits when he asked if he'd appear in BBC2 show Life's Too Short.
'I sent him an email and said: "Sorry about the Golden Globes, how would you like to get your own back?",' says Ricky.
'He replied: "I care not a jot, sir. I've been a fan of yours for ages. I found it hilarious. I read worse things about myself every day and it would be an honour.".'
And Ricky is now full of praise for the 48-year-old Hollywood star.
He says he's even a fan of Johnny's unique writing style.
'His emails are like poetry. He's made of bohemia, d'you know what I mean?' Ricky tells The Guardian Weekend.
'He's such a sweet soul.'
