Dr Conrad Murray blew a farewell kiss to his family before he left court to begin his 4-year prison sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson yesterday.
The 58-year-old received the maximum term available for his crime.
He was accused by the judge of having no remorse because of comments in a documentary aired after he was found guilty earlier this month.
'Dr Murray engaged in a recurring, continuous pattern of deceit,' Judge Michael Pastor told the LA court.
'He created a set of circumstances and became involved in a cycle of horrible medicine.
'Experimental medicine won't be tolerated.'
Dr Murray was convicted of abandoning Michael after delivering him a fatal dose of powerful anaesthetic propofol, which lead to his death at the age of 50 in June 2009.
Prior to the sentencing, the singer's family released an emotional plea to the judge that urged him to impose a term that 'reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and cast aside their Hippocratic Oath to do no harm.'
'Thank you for all your continued, amazing support today,' Tweets Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson, 56.
'Judge Pastor spoke real truth and nailed all of Murray's self-serving lies.'
