Actor Hugh Grant has been giving evidence at Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry into press standards and ethics in London.
The first celebrity to address the hearing, Hugh said his arrest in LA in 1995 with Hollywood hooker Divine Brown had not influenced his attack on certain sections of the media.
The Four Wedding And A Funeral star, 51, called some members of the tabloid press 'cowards and bullies' and said the paparazzi 'have no mercy and no ethics', but insists he's in favour of a free press.
'It's fine to hate me,' claimed Hugh. 'It's been extremely fashionable for a long time and that's what I expect in this country.
'All the campaigning I have done recently about the abuse by some sections of the British press is emphatically not motivated by when I was arrested in 1995. I expected there to be a press storm and I have no quarrel with it.'
Hugh explained he took out an injunction when he was linked with Chinese actress Tinglan Hong, 'to protect the mother of my child.'
The hearing continues...
