BABY JOY! Carla Bruni gives birth to French president Nicolas Sarkozy's child

The former model and her husband welcome new addition

Carla Bruni and French president Nicolas Sarkozy are celebrating the arrival of a little girl.

The former model, who's the only serving first lady in French history to have a baby, is now resting after the birth at Paris's private La Muette clinic.

'She's had the baby - it's a little girl,' announced a staff member, then the Elysee Palace confirmed the news.

But Nicolas, 56, had to rush off to a meeting with German chancellor Angela Merkl half an hour after the delivery.

The president has 3 children from his 2 past marriages and Carla, 43, is already mum to a 10-year-old son - but she admitted last month she wasn't enjoying her second pregnancy.

'I can't drink or smoke anymore,' she told French newspaper Le Parisien. 'I'm in a hurry to get it over with.'
