The British film industry had a great night at the Oscars last night, with The King's Speech scooping 4 awards, including Colin Firth's Best Actor accolade and the much-coveted Best Picture.

The film's 38-year-old director Tom Hooper won Best Director, and the movie also received the Original Screenplay award at the ceremony in LA.

'I've a feeling my career's just peaked,' Colin, 50, joked when receiving his award for his role as stammerer King George VI.

He then went on to thank 'all the people who have been rooting for me back home,' and his wife, 'Livia, for putting up with my fleeting delusions of royalty.'

A tearful Natalie Portman followed her Bafta win and took home Best Actress for Black Swan, and The Fighter's Melissa Leo beat Helena Bonham Carter to Best Supporting Actress. 

Christian Bale won Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter, Toy Story 3 was voted the top Animated Film, and The Social Network scooped Adapted Screenplay. 

The King's Speech won 4 of its 12 nominations and Inception saw equal success, winning 4 awards mainly for its technical achievements.

But it was a disappointing night for western film True Grit, which was up for 10 awards and took home none.
