Kelly Preston says stopping herself screaming her head off - or chatting - during the birth of new baby Benjamin will make her son serene and happy in later life.

Kelly and her actor husband John Travolta are devoted Scientologists, a belief-system which dictates the mother should be mute through labour. 

'Silent birth is basically just no words, as much as possible,' says Kelly, 48.

'If you need to moan, if you cry out, you know, all of that, of course that's normal.'

Kelly and John, 56, tragically lost their eldest son, Jett, 16, two years ago after he suffered a seizure.

The couple, who welcomed Ben in November, are also parents to daughter Ella Bleu, 10.

They are convinced their children's personalities benefit from the tranquility of their births.

'My kids have always been amazing,' Kelly tells the US Today show.

'Just very calm, very peaceful, happy and I absolutely know it's very much because of that.'
