Anna Friel has broken up with David Thewlis

Anna Friel has split from her partner of nine years, David Thewlis.

'Things have not been great for a long time and they have tried to keep this quiet to protect everyone,' a pal reveals.

Anna, 34, and David, 47 - who appears in the Harry Potter movies as werewolf Remus Lupin - met in 2001 on a flight to Cannes and have a five-year-old daughter Gracie.

The Brookside actress, who found success in the US in quirky series Pushing Daises, returned to the UK to star in Breakfast At Tiffany's at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

'It certainly did not help that Anna and David have been forced to live apart for so long, but there are other issues at hand that have made them realise the relationship is over,' a friend tells the Daily Mail.

Anna was pictures kissing actor Joseph Cross, 23, her co-star, last December.

At the time, the former Brookside actress stressed he was merely a friend.
