Prince William and Kate Middleton met at university in 2001

Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry next year.

Kate is proudly wearing the sapphire engagement ring that belonged to William's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

'The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton,' announces Clarence House.

'The
wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London.
Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

'Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family.

'Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father.

'Following
the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William
will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force.'

William and Kate, both 28, began dating in 2001 while studying at University Of St Andrews in Fife.

The couple are said to be considering 3 possible dates for the wedding - likely to be at Westminster Abbey- and the Queen is then expected to declare the big day a national holiday. 

'Although he would have loved to remain single until his mid-thirties,
the fact is William knows that Kate is the right girl for him,' says a source.
