Charlie Sheen has filed for divorce from wife Brooke Mueller.

The actor lodged papers at an LA court on Monday and has cited irreconcilable differences.

According to the documents, the couple - who got married in May 2008 - separated in Christmas 2009. 

Charlie, 45, is seeking joint custody of their 1-year-old twin sons Max and Bob and has asked the judge not to award Brooke any spousal support because they had signed a pre-nup. 

She also filed her own divorce papers on Monday.

Brooke, 32, is seeking sole custody of the boys and spousal support. 

Last week, Charlie was briefly hospitalised in New York after security at the city's Plaza Hotel alleged he was being disorderly. 

He divorced first wife Donna Peele in 1996 after a year of marriage and split from second wife Denise Richards in 2005 after 3 years of marriage.
