Gwen Stefani's husband Gavin Rossdale has revealed he once had a gay romance.

The Bush frontman embarked on a relationship with cross-dressing pop star Marilyn in the 1980s.

'When you're 17, Jesus Christ. I don't think there's anything strange about any form of... you're learning about life,' explains Gavin.

'It's a part of growing up. That's it. No more, no less.'

Although Marilyn has previously claimed they had a 5-year fling, this is the first time Gavin, 44, has spoken about the affair.  

'I think at the outset there was a sort of fear - that was right
at the beginning of Bush, and I didn't want it to be part of it,' he
tells Details.

'I've never wanted to appear closed about it. It's not something I've talked about really because it's always been in the glare of a tabloid world.'

Gavin and Gwen, 41, got married in 2002.

They are parents to Kingston, 4, and Zuma, 2.
