Spencer Pratt was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm on Saturday in Costa Rica.

The Hills star was taken to a local jail after airport officials found hunting weapons on him as he waited to catch a flight back to the US.

Spencer, 27, was booked before being released.

He has since released a bizarre statement to explain his brush with the law. 

'As part of my spiritual cleansing I've spent the last week living alone in the jungle, reflecting on my past transgressions, and working to become a better person,' it reads.

'I had to live off the land, and hunt to survive. As I departed the country this morning to continue my spiritual journey, I mistakenly brought my hunting weapons to the airport.

'It was an honest mistake, and they sent me on my way. On an unrelated note, I'm not allowed in the country anymore - but that's because of the chicken incident.'

Spencer and wife Heidi Montag, 23,announced their split in June and she filed for divorce in July, citing irreconcilable differences.
