Wyclef Jean is considering running in Haiti's forthcoming presidential election.

The singer has been discussing his plans with his family.

'Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward,' reads an open letter, signed from The Jean Family.

'If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.'

Wyclef - who was appointed the government's ambassador-at-large in 2007 - has until 7 August to declare his candidacy.

The elections will take place on 28 November.

Wyclef, 37, has his own charity, the Yele Haiti Foundation, to help the people of his homeland.

He was a key figure in the fundraising efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated the Caribbean nation in January.
