Actor sentenced over photographer spat

Sean Penn did not appear at the court hearing

Sean Penn has been ordered to complete 36 hours of anger management classes following an altercation with a paparazzi photographer last year.

The actor has also been sentenced by an LA judge to 3 years' probation and must perform 300 hours of community service.

Sean, who was not in court, pleaded no contest to misdemeanour vandalism as part of a plea deal.

He was originally charged with misdemeanour vandalism and battery in February and could have faced 18 months behind bars if convicted.

But after reaching the plea bargain yesterday, the battery count has now been dropped.

‘Prolonging this matter in the court system would not have been in Mr Penn's best interest and would've distracted from his charitable commitments, lawyer Richard Hirsch tells People.

‘Accordingly he has decided to accept the plea terms and move on.'

A follow-up hearing has been set for 8 July.
