Lil Wayne begins jail sentence

Rapper is led out of court in handcuffs

Lil Wayne released his new album Rebirth last month

Lil Wayne has started a one-year prison term over a weapons possession charge.

The rapper, real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, was sentenced at a Manhattan court yesterday. 

He was led out of the hearing in handcuffs and taken to New York's Rikers Island jail complex.

Lil Wayne, 27, could be released in eight months with good behaviour.

He pleaded guilty in October to charges arising from a 2007 arrest when a gun was found on his tour bus after a concert in Manhattan.

'He knew what he had to do, and he's doing it,' his laywer Stacey Richman tells the Associated Press.

Sentencing had already been postponed twice.

The first time, Lil Wayne requested a delay so he could have surgery on his teeth.

And then a fire broke out at the court where he was due to appear last week.
