Simon Cowell organised the charity track for Haiti

Simon Cowell's single in aid of victims of the Haiti earthquake has leaped to the top of the chart.

REM cover Everybody Hurts has sold over 453,000 copies since its release last week, according to the Official UK Charts Company.

It has the biggest first week sales of any charity track this century, even toppling The X Factor finalists' version of Hero in 2008.

‘The public have clearly taken the plight of the Haitian people to heart - this record is huge,' says the OCC's Martin Talbot.

Proceeds from Everybody Hurts go to the Disasters Emergency Committee and The Sun's Helping Haiti campaign.

‘It's already the biggest seller of the year so far, and is now likely to go on to be the number one single of 2010,' HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo tells the BBC.
