Simon Cowell has signed up Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis, JLS and Michael Buble for his charity single in aid of victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The artists will record a cover of REM's 1993 hit Everybody Hurts next week and the song will be released by Sony later this month.

The X Factor winner Joe McElderry, N-Dubz, Will Young, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Take That, George Michael and Sir Paul McCartney are also said to be in talks to lend their vocals to the track.

‘I'd like to make this record with as many different types of singer as we can,' says Simon, 50.

'And I hope everyone in the industry comes together to get involved. The response has been fantastic.'

All proceeds go to the Disasters Emergency Committee and The Sun's Helping Haiti campaign.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who asked Simon to organise the single, will waive the VAT.

And REM do not want royalties from the track.
