Avatar leads Bafta nominations

James Cameron's Avatar was the big winner at the Golden Globes

Avatar is in the running for eight awards at next month's Baftas.

James Cameron is up for Best Director for the sci-fi epic, which was named Best Movie Drama at the Golden Globes.

And the flick is shortlisted in the Best Film category.

The Hurt Locker and An Education also received eight nominations.

District 9 got seven nods, while Inglourious Basterds and Up In The Air vie for six prizes each.

George Clooney, 48, is up against Golden Globe winner Jeff Bridges, 60, Colin Firth, Andy Serkis and Jeremy Renner for Best Actor.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart, 19, has been nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award.

She faces competition from Skins hunk Nicholas Hoult, Carey Mulligan, Tahar Rahim and Jesse Eisenberg.

The Baftas takes place at London's Royal Opera House on 21 February.
