Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are now dads to a baby son.

Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John is 63-year-old Elton and David's first child and the 7lb 15oz boy's mother is a surrogate who gave birth in California on Christmas Day.

'Zachary is healthy and doing well,' Elton and David have said in a statement. The couple, who became civil partners in 2005, are 'overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment'.

In California, couples who have used a surrogate can apply for a pre-birth order.

They, and not the woman who delivered the baby, can then be listed as parents on the original birth certificate, regardless of whose egg and sperm was used in conception.

Last year David, 48, hinted that the couple would love to have a family when the time was right, though they were content with their godchildren.

'We don't want to put the raising of children into the hands of nannies and housekeepers,' he told People.

'We want to be active parents.'
