Victoria Beckham's mercy dash to be at husband David's side for his grandfather Joseph's funeral was well intended.
But like everything else in their relationship at the moment, it turned into a source of tension.
Posh, 35, made the trip to London from LA on a night flight - and coincided her visit with two fashion parties.
‘David's at a very low point with the death of his grandad. He felt Victoria was trying to fit in work with the funeral and asked her: "Have you come here to work or be with me?"' says our source.
‘In her defence,
she thought she was doing the right thing. But while David went to the wake at Tottenham Hotspurs' ground, Victoria was pictured at the British Fashion Awards with the likes of Kate Moss and Simon Le Bon.
‘They're under a terrible strain and it'll only get worse when David goes to AC Milan for six months,' adds the source.
‘He's grieving and Victoria's overworked with the kids and her career. The next few months apart will stretch their relationship to the limit.'
The last time David, 34, went to Milan, Posh admitted it was one of the worst times in her life.
‘I felt like someone had chopped my arm off,' she said. ‘We do everything together. I very rarely go out on my own, unless it's a work commitment.'
Insiders expect the next two weeks to be make-or-break for the couple. They'll spend time in America, then fly back to England to spend Christmas with Gordon Ramsay's family at their country home in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
‘At least Victoria will have a friend around in Gordon's wife Tana, who's been through the same pain as her,' says our source.
‘She knows what it's like to live with someone who's absorbed with their career. They've also both been through the mill when their partners were accused of cheating'.
For much of their time apart, Victoria will remain in LA for the sake of their three boys - Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz - and their schooling.
‘David has promised this will be the last time he leaves the family, but wasn't the AC Milan loan deal meant to be a one-off last year?' asks our insider.
‘He has the World Cup in the summer, then he'll be heavily involved in England's 2018 World Cup bid. It seems neverending to Posh. When will he finally stay at home? There's always something with David.'
Victoria would argue she has the same passion for fashion, so this enforced time apart has come at a terrible time for her. On 3 December, her spring collection of designer dresses - worth £350,000 - was stolen from a van transporting them to Heathrow Airport to be flown for the US.
‘This is a critical time for Victoria,' says our source. ‘The next year or so could be vital for her fashion career if she wants to be mentioned in the same breath as her mentor Roland Mouret. She can't afford to let up.
‘But where does this leave David's plans for another child? He's desperate for it to happen, but Victoria's refusing to allow her body to go through it. Not only could it be detrimental to her career, but with his work commitments she could be left bringing up the baby alone.'
