Robbie Williams shocked the world - and even his mum - with his proposal to Ayda Field on Aussie radio last week.
But the singer quickly appeared to backtrack and friends say the issue of marriage and babies is far from resolved or the loved-up pair.
‘When Robbie met Ayda, she had very little awareness of his fame in the UK,' a source tells Now.
‘Now that he's started his comeback, she's seen all the screaming fans and what he's like under pressure.'
Actress Ayda, 30, can take most of Robbie's excesses in her stride - one of the reasons friends say this relationship works while others have fallen by the wayside.
But even she was embarrassed by the radio proposal that Robbie, 35, hastily denied on his website. ‘He's talked about marriage with Ayda for a long time and she knows what he's like,' adds the source.
Robbie's likely to face a long round of publicity for his album Reality Killed The Video Star, which might include touring, the thing he dreads most.
A recent appearance on Loose Women was marred by speculation that he'd had his own fans drafted in and his triumphant return on The X Factor last month was dogged by talk of his erratic behaviour.
‘The music's been well received and Robbie still has his adoring fans,' says the source.
‘He could sell out the O2 for weeks and make a lot of money, but he finds touring lonely and draining. It remains to be seen if that part of the comeback goes as well as the rest has.'
