David Beckham 'heartbroken' over grandfather's death

Footballer told news while in South Africa

David Beckham took Joseph West to Buckingham Palace in 2003 to see the Queen give him his OBE

David Beckham has been left devastated by the death of his granddad.

Joseph West - the father of Becks' mum Sandra - died aged 83 at his London home yesterday after a long battle with lung cancer.

LA Galaxy star David was told the news in a tearful phone call from wife Victoria, 35, as he arrived in South Africa to take part in tomorrow's World Cup Finals draw.

'He was exceptionally close to Joseph and is heartbroken he wasn't there at the end,' a source tells The Sun. 

David is now considering whether to fly back to the UK before tomorrow's draw to help with the funeral arrangements. 

He and son Brooklyn, 10, have Joseph as their middle names.
