Pete Doherty has said sorry for performing an outdated verse of the German national anthem that has Nazi connotations.

The Babyshambles star, 30, was booed by fans after singing ‘Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles' at the on3 music festival in Munich on Saturday.

The line - which translates as ‘Germany, Germany above everything' - has been left out since the end of the World War II.

Pete's rep says he ‘unaware of the controversy'.

‘He deeply apologises if he has caused any offence,' the spokesperson tells the BBC.

Pete was later asked to leave the stage.

‘[He] wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd,' reads a letter from manager Adrian Hunter on the on3 website.

Pete himself is from Jewish descent and has fought against racism and fascism with numerous organisations. This is a subject he feels very strongly about.'
