Jan Williams says she's 'very excited'

Robbie Williams has always been close to his mum Jan

Robbie Williams has officially proposed to his girlfriend Ayda Field, according to his mum.

The star popped the question to the US actress live on Australian radio station 2day FM.

But his spokesman later said the pair were not engaged.

However, Jan Williams has revealed her son told her of his plans 'a week ago'.

'I'm very excited,' she told BBC Radio 5 Live. 'I'm really pleased.

'They've been together for nearly three years, so it's about time.

'She's a great mate, as well as a lover. She's got all the qualities that he needs in a girl. It's a lovely match.'

It is not clear if Robbie officially proposed before the radio show.

Asked about a wedding date, Jan added: 'I don't think it will be that far in the not-too-distant future.

'But that's all I'm going to say on that.'
