Redmond O'Neal was released from prison yesterday.
The 24-year-old - the son of Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett - has been transferred to the Impact Drug And Alcohol Treatment Centre in California.
Redmond - who was jailed for a drug arrest in January 2008 and a probation violation - must complete a year-long residential programme.
Judge Jane Godfrey praised Redmond for battling his addiction during yesterday's hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court.
‘Redmond has embraced recovery,' said his lawyer Richard Pintal. ‘All of his reports are extremely positive. He has taken huge steps towards his new life.
‘This has been a very challenging time for Redmond. He lost his mother while in recovery. He loved his mother dearly and that was extremely hard on him.
‘It would be challenging for anybody, much less a 24-year-old coming to grips with his addiction and recovery.'
Redmond is due back in court on 30 September to face separate charges related to a drink-driving arrest earlier this year and another probation violation.
But the charges could be dropped following the successful completion of his treatment.
