The diva tells Oprah Winfrey the depths of her drug despair
Thursday, 17 September 2009
Superstar Whitney Houston has broken her long silence about her drugs hell and revealed that at her lowest point she spent 7 months wearing pyjamas.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the singer told how her life spiralled out of control when she got hooked on drugs during her marriage to R&B star Bobby Brown in the 90s.
Whitney, whose comeback album I Look To You has shot to No 1 in the US charts, candidly talked about her drugs battle and recalled how her mother made a desperate attempt to get her clean by turning up at her home with the police.
‘Now, looking at it, I see the love and passion my mother had for me,’ Whitney revealed. ‘She came and said: “It’s not worth it.”
‘She said to Bobby: “If you move, they’re gonna take you down. Don’t make one move.”’ ‘And he stood there like he was scared. And she said: “Let’s go.”
‘She told me: “I’m not losing you to the world. I’m not losing you to Satan. I want my daughter back. I want to see that light in your eyes.”’
The 47-year-old star is rebuilding her life after a bitter divorce from Bobby two years ago, but her comeback has proved remarkable. The UK is preparing for Whitney fever, with her set to make her comeback performance on The X Factor next month.
After their brutally frank chat, Oprah called Whitney her ‘best ever interview’.
She added: ‘The thing most shocking to me is that Whitney tried to make herself smaller to fit in a marriage so the man could be bigger. How many women have done that? I deeply felt for her.’
