Kerry Katona believes Brian McFadden won't want to split up her brood

Last week, Brian McFadden apparently gave the strongest sign yet that he was prepared to fight for custody of his two daughters with Kerry Katona.

Speaking on Irish TV, he announced: ‘I want Kerry to give me the kids and me and my mum will look after them for the next six months to a year to give her time to get her life together.’

But in reality Brian, 29, hasn’t even spoken to his estranged 29-year-old wife since her drug secret was exposed and has no intention of seeking custody of Molly, eight, and Lilly-Sue, six.

‘Kerry was furious about this,’ a source tells Now. ‘She says it’s just another case of Brian using her for publicity.

‘He went on TV bleating about wanting to see more of his daughters, but he’s only seen them about five times this year. This custody fight talk frightens Kerry, but she knows deep down that you have to do a lot more than be filmed taking cocaine to lose your kids.

‘Another reason he’d never do it is that it’d mean separating them from their sister Heidi, two, and brother Max, one, and even Brian admits that would screw them up.

'He’s known about Kerry’s wild ways for years – in fact her cocaine use was why they split up in the first place – so this video can’t have come as the shock he claims.’

As Now previously revealed, Brian’s parents Brendan and Mairead look after his daughters in Dublin when they aren’t with Kerry but, as grandparents, they have almost no legal chance of getting custody.

‘They’ve been very worried about Kerry’s mental state, but even they like her nanny Gemma and think she does a good job,’ says our source.

‘Kerry says she doesn’t need the hassle of a custody battle – she’s had enough to last a lifetime. She’d fight Brian if he did try to take the kids, but she knows that won’t happen.’
