Slumdog Millionaire star’s dad dies

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail in mourning

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail played a young version of Salim in Slumdog Millionaire

The father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail has died.

Mohammed Ismail Shaikh passed away from tuberculosis at the family's home in Mumbai on Friday.

Azhar, 10, was at school at the time; he was only told the news when he returned home later that evening.
 
‘Unfortunately he became increasingly weak in recent weeks and couldn’t hang on any longer,’ a family spokesman tells the Daily Mail.

‘Azhar is absolutely devastated.’

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is expected to visit the family next month.
