Madonna was jeered by fans during a Sticky And Sweet gig in Romania.
The crowd booed the singer, 51, when she commented on the poor treatment of Romany Gypsies.
‘It’s been brought to my attention that there’s a lot of discrimination against Romanies and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe - it made me feel very sad,’ she said.
‘We don't believe in discrimination, we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone.’
Madonna received more heckles when she talked about prejudice against homosexuals.
But her publicist says there were also cheers from the 60,000-strong crowd in Bucharest.
‘Madonna has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement,’ Liz Rosenberg tells the BBC.
