The star gets a little height help

Tom Cruise is quite a bit shorter than wife Katie Holmes

He may be a Hollywood giant, but pint-sized Tom Cruise achieved a Mission Impossible last week by coming face to face with his statuesque wife Katie Holmes, 30.

Clearly fed up with her towering above him, Tom unveiled his latest weapon in the height wars: a pair of Nike trainers which have suspiciously chunky soles.

Tom, 47, took a private jet to Melbourne, where Katie’s filming the thriller Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, and spent the day with her and their daughter Suri, three, at the city’s Royal Botanical Gardens.

But it was evident that the actor, who claims to be 5ft 7in, had suddenly gained a few inches.

The pair’s height difference has long been the butt of jokes – US talk show host David Letterman once infuriated the 5ft 9in actress in an interview by commenting: ‘I’m thinking that Tom Cruise has got the loveliest woman in the world. How does that happen, for God’s sake? He’s shorter than you are.’

A visibly angry Katie hit back: ‘I think he’s sexy.’
