Britney Spears nominated for seven MTV VMAs

Britney Spears made her long-awaited comeback last year

Britney Spears has earned seven nods at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer, who won three gongs last year, has been praised for her comeback album Circus.

Also up for awards are Beyonce Knowles, 27, and Lady GaGa, 23 - each scoring nine nominations.

‘I’m excited and honoured to be tied for most nominated for the VMAs,' Beyonce says in a statement.

‘I’ve been blessed this year to have Single Ladies become a video people really connected with and responded to.

'I’ve spent so much time watching all the great versions people created all around the world.

'It’s beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video.'

Kanye West, Eminem and Jay-Z are among the others artists to score multiple nominations.

Russell Brand will host the event in New York in September.
