BBC denies Strictly Come Dancing ageism claim

Corporation defends itself after dancer's exit

Karen Hardy danced with Gary Rhodes in the last series

Strictly Come Dancing bosses say the decision to change Karen Hardy's role has nothing to do with her age.

The BBC was accused of ageism after it was revealed the 39-year-old will no longer be a dancer on the show.

‘It was a mutual decision. We are in discussions with her as to what her new role will be,’ reads a statement.

Karen won the fourth series with cricketer Mark Ramprakash in 2006.

‘I'm discussing new ways I can be involved in the show this year and pursue a number of other exciting opportunities,’ she says.

Arlene Phillips, 66, was dropped as a judge six weeks ago in favour of Alesha Dixon, 30.

Among the new dancers joining the show are Katya Virshilas, 25 and Natalie Lowe, 28.
