Rihanna: Let me move on, Chris!

Rihanna's fuming at Chris's very public apology

Chris Brown's apology has thrust Rihanna back into the limelight

Chris Brown's video apology last week was a PR gesture designed to show the world that he has deep regrets about his violence towards his ex. But the one person he said he wanted to reach was Rihanna – and pals say she’s furious.

‘She’s in total shock. It was like he gave her another blow, albeit one of a different kind,’ a friend tells Now. ‘All she knows is that it’s in the news again and that’s the one thing she didn’t want. She’s been trying to put it behind her and move on as fast as possible.’

While Chris told the world through YouTube that what he did was ‘inexcusable’ and that he was truly sorry, he forgot to tell Rihanna that he was going to make the statement. In fact, the first she heard about it was when her management team spotted the apology online.

‘In the video he says he’s apologised to Rihanna privately many times and that’s true,’ a source in Rihanna’s camp reveals. ‘So we’re questioning what this video is really for. It’s clearly something he’s done for his public image. It’s convenient that he’s waited until his new album’s coming out.’

Chris’s friends say he always wanted to say sorry publicly, but lawyers made him keep quiet until after last month’s trial, in which he was found guilty of assault. But insiders point out that his new album Graffiti will be out at the end of the summer and Chris is desperate to save his career after being banned from radio stations following his attack on Rihanna on 8 February.

The truth, according to friends, is that Chris could have let Rihanna know he was going to put out a statement. Under the terms of his probation he’s banned from contacting his ex, but the judge said Rihanna could contact him if she wanted to. And the texts and emails already have been flying, according to those in the know.

‘They spoke earlier last week and Chris made no mention of any public statement then,’ her friend says. ‘She wishes he’d given her at least a heads-up about it. But that’s Chris – always thinking of himself first and forgetting how this would impact on her.’

Rihanna’s trying to move on and has dated other men, partly after advice from mentor Jay-Z. The pair were in London last week and the rapper spent £8,000 on champagne and vodka in a nightclub, encouraging Rihanna to enjoy herself and forget her troubles.

Despite this, Rihanna’s been struggling to let go of Chris, but the apology has made her think twice about staying in contact. ‘Every discussion about that night is like reliving the humiliation all over again. So I don’t see her eager to chat to him about it any time soon,’ says our source. ‘Her way of handling it is to fall silent and retreat.’
