David Beckham wasn’t prepared for the vile abuse he received from angry spectators when he returned to LA.
But thankfully, despite the fans turning against him, there’s one friend he and wife Victoria can always count on: Tom Cruise.
Last Sunday, Tom was by the family’s side yet again as Victoria, 35, orchestrated a show of support for David’s homecoming.
As well as Tom, 47, who sat close to Posh the whole time, Take That singer Gary Barlow and PR guru Simon Fuller were also there to cheer on David as he played his first match for LA Galaxy since he returned from AC Milan.
In Grant Wahl’s biography The Beckham Experiment, David admits that he’s spoken to Tom for advice most days since they met six years ago. And he's revealed he named youngest son Cruz after the Hollywood star.
Tom’s power wouldn’t be so concerning if he wasn’t second in command of the religious cult Scientology, which means he’s always looking to recruit.
Although Victoria and David say they ‘respect’ Scientology but it’s not for them, Tom usually gets his way with friends. However, he knows they wouldn’t risk moving into Scientology right now as it would alienate their fanbase and horrify their families.
But, according to a UK friend, Tom’s influence over them is now so great that they’ve even picked up a similar accent.
Our source says: ‘It’s like in school when you want to be friends with the popular kids, so you dress like them, talk like them, act like them.
‘In return, Tom runs film ideas by David. When he was considering signing a deal with their friend Kate Beckinsale’s husband, director Len Wiseman, for a thriller called Motorcade, he asked David what he thought about the plot and dialogue. They really do love each other like best pals.’
