Singer thinks squeaky clean band should be having fun

Gary Lightbody doesn't agree with the Jonas Brothers' attitude to sex.
Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas all wear purity rings to symbolise their pledge to remain virgins until they're married.
'When a band takes a stand so vehemently and so opposite of my own views I have to speak up, simply as a concerned citizen,' says Snow Patrol frontman Gary. 'This is not about their music, that I won't comment on. Two words - promise rings?'
Gary, 33, thinks that the silver bands will not prevent the group's natural urges.
'From all of our teenage years onwards, we think of sex a lot,' he writes on his blog.
'You think abstinence is going to cut the mustard? I may know very little, but one thing I'm sure of is that this simply will not work.
'When they are only taught abstinence they are really taught nothing at all. We all have a primal, almost ceaseless urge to mate and a bit of silver on one finger isn't going to stop millions of years of animal evolution.'

I've seen the comments made by both JB and SP fans and have to say that they are loyal fans but have very much one sided views. Purity Ring abstainers are l'unreal on the subject of teenage sex. Sex needs to be discussed openly with teens and pre teens along with it's consequences and it's place in a loving relationship. Sex is not simply a fun exercise like trampolining as GL suggests or 'the most natural thing in the world'. Even animals aren't shagging all the time as he thinks. Many species only mate during the mating season when their food is plentiful and some mate for life. On the other hand sex isn't a taboo subject and telling kids to just say 'no' without telling them why doesn't work especially as they haven't been allowed to say 'no' to anything in their life before. Those JB fans who criticise SP for not being successful are unaware of the success they do have in Britain and the rest of Europe. They are a British band and have cracked the US but find it hard to keep up the success their because it would take a lot of touring. GL doesn't sleep with his fans although he is popular with female fans. They're older so they don't scream at SP concerts; just sing along. He doesn't have the looks to appeal to teens. He says that he got the sleeping around out of his system when he was a teenager but I find that difficult to believe as he also says he was very skinny, spotty and shy back then. Perhaps the girls were drunk and so was he.
