Lionel Richie: I checked into rehab with Nicole

Singer wanted to support daughter

Nicole Richie is Lionel Richie's adopted daughter

Lionel Richie stayed at a clinic with daughter Nicole while she battled her drug addiction in 2003.

The singer wanted to show his support for the Simple Life star, now 27.

‘When she checked into rehab, her mother [ex-wife Brenda] and I checked in with her,’ says Lionel, 59. ‘We wanted to make sure we understood exactly what she was getting into.’

Lionel wishes he'd realised earlier that Nicole was in real trouble as a teenager.

‘I was trying to make it as the solo guy at that time,’ he tells US chat show host Larry King.

‘She caught me right at that wonderful period where that rocket took off again for the second time.’

Nicole and fiancé Joel Madden, 30, are currently expecting their second child.

They are already parents to 16-month-old daughter Harlow.
