Redmond O’Neal has been ordered to take part in an in-custody drug programme.

The 24-year-old, who is the son of Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal, will begin a 12-month rehabilitation course at Wayside Honor Ranch in California.

Redmond appeared at LA's Superior Court on Thursday for the hearing regarding his probation violation- after pleading guilty to drug possession in June 2008 - and his DUI.

‘This is an opportunity to change your life,’ prosecuting lawyer Tony Estradas told him, reports Us Weekly. ‘Our goal is for you to enjoy a long, healthy life that is free from addiction.’

If Redmond successfully completes his stint in rehab, it could remove him from probation and wipe his record clean of previous drug convictions.

If he fails he could face 4 years in prison.
