Madonna releases picture of her cradling Mercy James

Snap shows toddler sleeping soundly in her arms

Madonna has now returned from Malawi

Madonna has released a photo of her cuddling Mercy James - the child she hoped to adopt.

The snap was first published in Malawi's Nation On Sunday newspaper.

‘I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible,’ she told the paper.

‘And it’s my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country.’

Madonna took in David Banda, 3, in 2006, but the singer's bid to adopt Mercy, 4, was rejected. 

‘Though I have been advised that I cannot publicly discuss the pending appeal regarding my desire to adopt Mercy, I do want to say how much I appreciate the level of support that I have received from the people of Malawi and my friends around the world,’ she added.
