Scientology pushes her to breaking point
Monday, 16 March 2009
For weeks we’ve seen Katie Holmes looking frail and finally we can reveal the reason.
The star is said to have turned to Scientology’s controversial ‘purification rundown’ detox to help her deal with the stress of reconciling her career ambitions and her intense relationship with Tom Cruise.
Katie, 30, who’s under pressure from Tom to have another baby, sees the detox as the way to get spiritual guidance. The ‘purif’ ritual, as it’s known, involves an intensive daily regime of exercise, oil ingestion, saunas and high doses of vitamins to supposedly cleanse the body of harmful toxins and give an ‘overall sense of well-being’.
But Katie looked far from well as she emerged from West Hollywood restaurant El Sole, where she dined with Tom and friends recently.
‘She seemed really out of it,’ a diner revealed. ‘She looked tired and only shared a serving of organic steak tartare with Tom. He was doing most of the talking and it looked like Katie just wanted to crawl under the table. The life was sapped out of her.’
A source tells Now: ‘Katie first tried the detox as part of a Scientology boot camp last year and found it helped her. She just needs time out as the stress of her lifestyle’s taking its toll. She’s travelling back and forth between LA and New York, where she’s filming the movie The Extra Man, because Tom won’t let their two-year-old daughter Suri stay away from LA indefinitely.
Despite looking painfully thin, Katie’s loving her new look. ‘She’s become fixated with her weight,’ says our source. ‘She says she hates her “chunky” legs and won’t stop trying to slim them down. But the worry is that between her need for spiritual guidance and her desire to slim, Katie could be putting her health at risk. Something really has to give.’
