Sniffer dogs targeted Paris Hilton and her pals after the Brazil v Holland World Cup football match in South Africa on Friday and she was 'temporarily' detained by the police.
The socialite's fingerprints are reported to have been taken at a police station close to the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
But the 29-year-old wil not be charged.
Paris's pal, a female photographer, has admitted possession of cannabis.
'The case was considered in court and the charges against Ms Hilton were dropped,' says police spokeswoman Brigadier Miranda Mills.
Paris's representative has dismissed the debacle as a mix-up.
'Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana,' publicist Dawn Miller said in a statement.
'The incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it.
'The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made. The authorities have apologised for wrongfully accusing her since she had nothing to do with the incident.'
Paris later wrote on Twitter: 'Hey guys, there's a lot of crazy rumours going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn't do anything.'
