John Barrowman: Not all us gays mince about

Torchwood star stood up to bullies

John Barrowman formalised his partnership with Scott Gill in 2006

John Barrowman had a tough time growing up in Illinois.

The Torchwood star, who is openly gay, was teased as a child for starring in school plays.

But John, 41, who was also a talented athlete, didn't let the bullies get him down.

‘The jocks would see me with my friends from the musical productions and call us the “choir fags”,’ he says.

‘I wouldn’t take shit from anyone. They knew I would get them back in training the next day.’

Now John says it's important that he doesn't come across as a camp stereotype. 

'I don't really like the idea that people think of all gay men as the
same,' he tells Seven. 'I hope people look at me and see that not all
of us are mincing about!'
