When Lily Allen performed on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno recently, her trim figure and perfectly coiffed hair wouldn’t have looked out of place on any Hollywood starlet.
It was easy to forget that this is the same Lily who has a reputation for mouthing off about everything from drugs to Cheryl Cole.
But Now can reveal there’s a massive machine behind Lily that’s transforming her from gawky MySpace cult to slick, international superstar.
‘Lily may not seem the type to take orders from her record company, but she’s determined to break America and she’ll do anything to make that happen,’ reveals a source.
Lily made her intentions clear recently when she pleaded with US fans on the internet to buy her album It’s Not Me, It’s You. She wrote: ‘I’ve never begged you to buy from me, but I am now. This will be the only time ever in my life that this could happen for me.’
Key to achieving US success is a meticulous image overhaul. Even Lily’s hair extensions are among the slickest in the business.
‘There’s been a huge change in Lily’s image,’ says the source. ‘She was 21 when she first found fame and had a younger look. Now she always has a wardrobe and make-up consultant with her and never has a hair out of place.’
Lily’s much slimmer too, having had hypnotherapy to control her urge to comfort eat. Two record company minders are with her at all times while she’s in the US and she’s been warned not to go near drugs - and watch what she says.
‘A special media consultant has been giving Lily advice on chat shows,’ says the source.
‘It was noted that, when she had a row with gossip website blogger Perez Hilton on Twitter, she called him the American insult “douchebag” rather than something her US fans wouldn’t understand.
People like Lily being feisty, but Americans wouldn’t accept it if she was too crude or said anything pro-drugs on a family chat show.’
