Russell Brand: Prank calls were funny

Comedian thinks Radio 2 scandal was blown out of proportion

Sunday, 8 February 2009

Russell Brand doesn't regret insulting Andrew Sachs on his Radio 2 show in October.

The comedian and Jonathan Ross, 48, caused controversy when they made prank calls to the Fawlty Towers star, 78.

But Russ, 33, reckons the scandal was blown out of proportion.

‘I’m more offended by people saying it’s not funny than by anything else that’s happened,’ he tells GQ.

‘The reason it was funny is because it IS so wrong - such an incredibly rude thing to do. That’s what was funny.

'People have got to be able to see, I hope, the distinction. Of course it’s really rude to have done that, and that’s why I resigned and all of that stuff - but because it’s such a terrible thing to do, that’s what’s funny.

‘I apologised for it. Now, what about all that f***ing madness? The phenomenon. Nobody’s responding to the actual event, I think.’

i agree totally, it was all blown out of proportion completely!! even the young lass was being interviewed and even she said she just couldnt believe these celebrities were talking about her and laughing about it. so much for being so hurt and offended by it all the only reason she made such a big deal out of it was so she could have her 15 minutes of fame

It may have been blown out of all proportion, but the calls went the the girls granddad and were immensely rude and hurtful. This was not a prank it was sheer stupidity and should not have been allowed on radio. They both should have been fined and sacked and never ever allowed on BBC TV or radio again.

Just a question to both GA & Holly - were either of you actually listening to the radio show when these phone call's were being made? And it doesnt count if you have listened to it on youtube or some other way after the fact - ask yourself how you heard about this whole ordeal...I agree they both went too far but what I object to is that the majority of the people who complained werent even listening to the show & and only knew about it after the Daily Mail decided on this witch hunt. Let it go peoples - Russ is a comedic genius, and Ross is, well Ross is just good ol Ross!

You don't have to hear it to be offended.Your argument doesn't really stand up Frances. Jopnathan Ross is a talentless fool, his "skill" such as it is consists of reading from an autocue, or repeating jokes that someone else has written. Well worth his reported "hundwed gwand" a week from the BBC licence fund. Russell Brand at least has an act of his own, not that I find him particularly funny, but each to their own.
