Heath Ledger nominated for Oscar a year after his death

Actor recognised for role in The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger died at the age of 28 from an overdose of prescription drugs

Heath Ledger has been nominated for Best Actor In A Supporting Role at this year’s Oscars.

The late actor has been praised for his role as The Joker in Batman film The Dark Knight.

Brad Pitt , 45, is up for Best Actor In A Leading Role for his portrayal of a man ageing backwards in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

The movie has earned a staggering 13 nods, while Slumdog Millionaire received 10.

Kate Winslet, 33, will compete with Angelina Jolie, 33, Meryl Streep, 59, and Anne Hathaway, 26, in the Best Actress In A Leading Role category.
