The Girls Aloud singer comes clean about her career hopes
Saturday, 24 January 2009
Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle has given her clearest indication yet that she’s thinking about leaving the chart-topping group.
Nadine tells NOW: ‘I can see all of us in Girls Aloud going solo. I like singing – that’s what I do – so I could go back home and sing with who I used to sing with in Derry. Or I could sing in LA.’
Nadine, 23, is well aware of her value to the group.
‘I’m definitely the singer. I do most of the vocals,’ she says.
Friends say Nadine’s become envious of X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, 25, and now fears that Girls Aloud could be marketed in the future as Cheryl and her backing band.
But the group’s former manager Louis Walsh has said he’ll make Nadine a solo star if she ever wants to go it alone.
Cracks began to appear in Nadine’s relationship with the rest of the group when she moved to LA after beginning a relationship with Desperate Housewives star Jesse Metcalfe in 2006. Despite ending that affair, Nadine’s stayed in the US, while the rest of the band are based in Britain.
The other girls were said to be furious when she missed a flight back to London to join them at the Brits last year after mislaying her passport.
She refused to take part in last year’s ITV2 reality TV show The Passions Of… Girls Aloud and, in September, she missed the group’s performance on Jo Whiley’s Radio 1 show.
Nadine tells us that one of the main issues between her and the rest of Girls Aloud is that she’s much more of a private person.
‘If you do too much TV, it allows people to make an informed decision about whether or not they think you’re an arsehole!’ she says.
She also has another reason to stay in the US: her new man, former US football star Jason Bell, 30.

She was always marketed as the lead singer which annoys me! She was in Irish Popstars so when she auditioned for Rivals she was Louis' favourite to get in the band and had the advantage of him backing her! She is not the best singer though and if she goes solo she'll fail miserably as she's better in a band vocal rather than a solo vocal. Of all the girls to go solo Nicola has the best voice, she can make her voice sound powerful and still have the vulnerabiltiy at the same time. Cheryl's my favourite but I prefer them as a band not solo artists!!
Definately the most talented of girls aloud
