Tilda Swinton: I get mistaken for a man

Actress says it's because she has short hair

Friday, 26 December 2008

Tilda Swinton admits people often think she's a bloke.

The actress, who has 11-year-old twins Xavier and Honor, gets mistaken for their dad.

‘People call me “Sir” in American hotels,’ she says.

'‘I’m relatively tall, I don’t wear make-up and I often wear my hair short.

'My son wears his hair long and we’re often called father and daughter.’

But Tilda, 48, who stars in Julia, loves the challenge of playing male characters.

‘It’s fun!’ she says. ‘Often there are poetic and creative moments in androgyny.’
