Tom Cruise: I regret my outburst on Oprah Winfrey show

But actor says media backlash brought him closer to wife Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise has admitted that he should have controlled himself better during his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in May 2005.

The actor jumped up and down on the US chat show host’s sofa as he expressed his love for Katie Holmes, 29.

Tom, 46, was ridiculed in the media for his behaviour.  

‘There are things that I could have done better,’ he says. ‘I could have handled things better.

'I was surprised at the criticism. As a father and a husband you want to protect your family and tell them not to worry because it is all going to be OK.’

But Tom says the backlash united him and wife Katie, 29, with whom he has daughter Suri, 2.

‘It brought everyone closer together: Katie’s entire family and my family,’ he tells the Daily Mirror.

‘Going through that stuff is not pleasant and I think it hit an extreme, but Kate’s a very sure and confident and strong woman.

‘You just learn from it and move on. I have a blessed life because I have a happy family and children that I adore and everyone knows how I feel about Kate. It just brought us even closer together.’
