Comedian slags off residents of Maidstone
Saturday, 1 November 2008
Alan Carr has upset Maidstone residents by labelling them racist and homophobic.
The gay comedian, 32, says his stand-up routines didn't go down well in the Kent town.
‘They hated me,’ he tells The Sun. ‘I never lasted more than 7 minutes. It was full of homophobic narrow-minded morons.
‘And it wasn't just me. If you were black or Asian, you got racist abuse. If you were a woman you got, "Show us your tits".’
But The Sunday Night Project host says he’d get away with promoting his book Look Who It Is! in Maidstone ‘because half the people there can’t read'.
MP for Maidstone and The Weald, Anne Widdecombe, has responded to the comic’s outburst.
‘He is talking complete rot,’ she says. ‘We have very high standards of behaviour and beliefs in Maidstone and it is obvious from his comments that he fails to meet them.'

This is so sad. My two boys have lived in and around Maidstone all their lives. They know that all people are equal and to judge on deeds and words alone. From always admiring Alan Carr, both are now questioning the intelligence of a man who can deliberately slur and insult a whole population of a town based on limited experience. To get respect, you have to give respect - something that Mr Carr seems to have rudely forgotten on his rise up the slippery pole. He has disappointed two lovely young men who will never look at him in the same way again - unless of course, the opinionated comedian has concrete evidence to back up his claim of town wide illiteracy, homophobia and racism? We look forward to his response.
It's probably more to do with the fact he's got a face you just want to punch, and a voice that makes you wish you were deaf.
Come off it - Kent is the worst place for racism and you know it. Maybe Liz and Anon are friends with the few nice ones (Liz, less so) but you can't deny what is right in front of you. Don't take offense just for the sake of it. Open your eyes!
I have lived in Maidstone 23 years and now live in Brighton because of some of the people that do live in Maidstone. I just feel that they spoil it for everybody else that loves Alan Carr like myself that they would never have a chance to see him in Maidstone again because of the abuse he got i dont blame him but not of all the people are like that in Maidstone I love Alan and i would never have gave him the abuse he got.
