Rose McGowan has caused controversy at the Toronto Film Festival.
Speaking at the premiere of her new film Fifty Dead Men Walking, she said she would have joined the Irish Republican Army if she had been raised in Belfast.
The actress, 35, plays an IRA operative in the movie about Martin McGartland, who infiltrated the IRA in the 80s.
‘I imagine, had I grown up in Belfast, I would 100 per cent have been in the IRA,’ Rose says. 'My heart just broke for the cause. Violence is not to be played out daily and provide an answer to problems, but I understand it.’
But Martin is incensed at her remarks. ‘She must have taken leave of her senses,’ he tells the Daily Mail.
‘[Her] comments were insulting to victims of IRA terrorism and she should apologise. It’s easy to say these sorts of things when you live in LA.’
He went into hiding for years after being exposed as a double agent and almost losing his life.
