Singer will do something 'fun and unexpected'
Thursday, 4 September 2008
Britney Spears is to open Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.
But the star, who became a laughing stock at last year’s ceremony for her performance of Gimme More, will not sing.
Instead MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler says she'll be doing something ‘fun and unexpected’ at the annual event.
‘MTV has long played an important role in my career,’ Britney, 26, said in a statement.
‘How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?
'I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.’
She is shortlisted for three VMAs, including video of the year for Piece Of Me.
‘It feels like it's her year,’ Van Toffler adds. ‘It's our 25th anniversary of the VMAs and she's been such a critical piece of MTV's history.’
Russell Brand, 32, will host the ceremony in Hollywood.
