With Tom's career in crisis, Katie is getting fed up

Katie Holmes married a heartthrob but Tom Cruise's status is not what it once was

Katie Holmes is suffering under the strain of taking the lead in her marriage as Tom Cruise comes to terms with his sinking popularity.

While Katie has Hollywood at her feet, her husband’s starting to lose the heartthrob status that first attracted her to him.

After Katie, 29, failed to show at the Scientology Celebrity Centre’s 39th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles on 9 August, rumours surfaced that cracks were appearing in the couple’s previously strong marriage.

Two days later, however, Katie played the dutiful wife, flying to 46-year-old Tom’s side in LA for the premiere of his latest movie Tropic Thunder, in which he only has a bit part.

A source says: ‘Tom was clinging to Katie, which is no surprise – she’s been his rock these past few months. He can no longer command top fees for his movies as his name isn’t a guarantee of box-office success any more and that’s hit his confidence hard. So much so that he even considered giving up acting at one point.

‘At the premiere, they seemed mismatched. Katie looked every inch the glamorous starlet, while Tom looked needy, diminished and much older.

‘It remains to be seen whether their marriage can weather this storm.’
